Canadian libraries launch summer reading programs for children

Library systems across Canada are opening their annual summer reading programs for children aged 3 to 12. In High Prairie, Alberta, the program runs from July 2 to August 20 with the theme “Oh the Places You’ll Go,” offering games, crafts, reading contests and a party and sleep‑over for older participants. Registration opens June 15 with a $10 fee per child, and the schedule is divided into three age groups with daily sessions and prize incentives.

In Maple Ridge, British Columbia, the Summer Reading Club continues its province‑wide initiative, now involving more than 173,000 children. This year’s theme is “Under the Sea,” featuring a community art display of fish in the library atrium, stickers, medals, and a launch party on June 25 with crafts and performances. Both programs aim to sustain literacy skills over the summer break through reading, audiobooks, and related activities.
