CFB Wainwright fire investigation underway after four soldiers killed

Investigations are ongoing into a deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta that occurred on October 17. The incident, which took place during a routine training exercise on an anti-grenade launcher range, resulted in the deaths of four soldiers: Pte. Shaun Farrell, Pte. Aidan Goulding, Pte. Hayden Lykkemark, and Sgt. Morgan Wong.

Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan stated that the rapid speed of the fire was a primary factor in preventing soldiers from escaping. The fire originated in a designated “permanent danger zone,” an area restricted to firefighters due to live-fire hazards. While the cause of the fire is still being determined, military officials confirmed there was no indication of an explosion.

In addition to the fatalities, 39 others were injured. As of recent updates, 27 soldiers remained hospitalized, with 13 in critical condition. Among the injured is Cpl. Liam Keane, a medic who reportedly ran into the fire multiple times to rescue fellow soldiers before being critically injured himself.

Military police are currently investigating the decision-making processes that occurred once the fire began, specifically why training continued as the situation developed. While training has since resumed at the base, officials stated that procedures will be modified if investigations identify systemic issues.
