Canadian mother tattoos keyboard on arm for autistic son

Jessica Fletcher, a Canadian mother, has gained widespread attention after tattooing a functional keyboard onto her forearm to assist her nonverbal autistic son, Hunter, in communicating.

The decision followed an incident at a restaurant where Hunter’s Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device ran out of battery. To communicate his needs, Hunter drew a makeshift keyboard on a napkin, prompting Fletcher to realize that technology alone could not be the sole method for his expression.

The tattoo includes letters, emoticons, and an “I heart you” button, serving as a permanent, battery-free backup. Beyond reliability, the tattoo provides a level of privacy that the electronic tablet lacks, as it allows for quiet, whispered exchanges rather than broadcasting words out loud. Fletcher has since partnered with a clothing company to create keyboard-themed shirts to support other families.
