Canadian municipalities grapple with housing shortfalls and youth funding gaps

The city of Maple Ridge in British Columbia reported that it fell short of the province’s second‑year housing target, completing only 554 net new residential units against a goal of 672. Although the combined two‑year target of 1,284 units was nearly met, council member Sunny Schiller said the shortfall highlights systemic issues in the housing delivery system and noted city initiatives such as a concierge program and planning department restructuring aimed at improving approvals.

In Alberta, Red Deer city council approved a resolution urging provincial and federal governments to provide permanent funding for its youth transitional housing program. Councillor Bruce Buruma warned that recent provincial cuts forced a $254,000 reallocation to keep the service running, and the program could lose all funding after March 2027. Council emphasized the need for long‑term support to prevent vulnerable youths from becoming homeless.
