Canadian oil producers await Pathways carbon storage agreements

Major oilsands producers, including Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. and Cenovus Energy Inc., are working toward a November 15 deadline to finalize binding agreements regarding the Pathways carbon storage project. The project involves a pipeline network designed to transport captured carbon dioxide from northern Alberta sites to an underground storage hub near Cold Lake.

These agreements are critical for future investment. Canadian Natural president Scott Stauth stated that the company will determine its 2027 spending plans once definitive agreements are reached with the federal government and the Alberta government. Similarly, Cenovus Energy executive Jeff Lawson noted the complexity of these bespoke agreements, describing the timeline to meet the mid-month target as tight.

The progress of Pathways is linked to a broader energy accord between Ottawa and Alberta. Under this arrangement, the advancement of the Pathways project is tied to the development of the Pacific Link pipeline, a proposed West Coast route intended to facilitate increased crude output while offsetting emissions through carbon capture.
