Canadian opposition accuses Liberal government of leaking legislation

Conservative and NDP Members of Parliament have accused the Liberal government, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, of leaking details of forthcoming legislation to the media to influence public perception.

Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer specifically cited leaks regarding Bill C-40, a defense-related bill that would establish the Defence Investment Agency as a government corporation. Scheer requested that the House Speaker investigate the matter as a potential breach of parliamentary privilege or contempt of Parliament.

NDP MP Don Davies also criticized the government, describing a pattern of unauthorized leaks to journalists intended to shape public discourse. Davies noted that media reports regarding Bill C-40 contained specific information that appeared to have been released prior to the bill’s official introduction.
