Canadian premiers react to U.S. trade negotiations

Canadian provincial leaders are reacting to ongoing trade negotiations between Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government and the United States aimed at averting threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian imports. While federal officials, including Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, report that an agreement is close to being finalized, provincial responses vary.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew criticized U.S. President Donald Trump, describing him as “erratic, irresponsible, and not to be trusted.” Kinew expressed concern that making concessions to an unreliable partner might jeopardize future stability, though he noted Manitoba might follow a “Team Canada” approach. He also addressed the federal request for provinces to end bans on U.S. alcohol imports as part of the negotiation strategy.

In contrast, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has previously been vocal in his criticism of Trump, has remained silent regarding the progress of the talks. His office has declined to comment on whether the province will comply with federal requests to lift liquor bans on American products to facilitate the trade deal.
