Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spent $160,000 on airline meals

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney was reported to have spent nearly CAD 160,000 on in‑flight meals during a week‑long overseas trip in November 2025 that included stops in Athens, Abu Dhabi, Johannesburg and the Canary Islands. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) said the bill covered 55 staff members, averaging about CAD 2,850 per person, and listed items such as Chilean sea bass, beef tenderloin, “death by chocolate” desserts and a CAD 90 glass of orange juice. CTF director Franco Terrazzano compared the expense to a typical Canadian family’s ten‑year grocery budget and questioned Carney’s commitment to fiscal restraint. The federation noted that other ministers have kept similar costs under CAD 10,000 for comparable trips. Earlier CTF disclosures showed Carney’s total airline‑catering spend in his first year approached CAD 1 million, prompting a defence ministry comment that some figures may be misaligned with invoices.
