Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney targets $1 trillion capital flight reversal at investment summit

Prime Minister Mark Carry is using a two‑day Canada Investment Summit in September to try to reverse an estimated $1 trillion of foreign capital outflows that accumulated over the past decade. The summit will bring together international CEOs, institutional investors and business leaders to showcase new trade partnerships and regulatory reforms that Carney says will make Canada more attractive for investment. Recent foreign direct investment reached a five‑year high of $96.8 billion, but Carney hopes the event will boost inflows and address the “most significant capital exodus in modern Canadian history” reported by the Royal Bank of Canada.

Carney’s trade agenda has also sparked tension with the United States. Policies that tighten dairy, auto and alcohol imports have prompted U.S. officials to impose retaliatory tariffs, intensifying a dispute that began when the Trump administration raised its own tariffs on Canadian goods. The resulting back‑and‑forth is affecting Canadian farmers, manufacturers and consumers, underscoring the broader economic stakes of Carney’s approach.
