Canadian provinces expand gaming markets and addiction services
In Alberta, the provincial government is seeking proposals for new gambling addiction services following the launch of its regulated online gaming market. The Mental Health and Addiction Ministry is looking to fund programs, such as a 21-day bed-based treatment program, using revenue generated from the iGaming system. Under the new regulations, the province takes a 20 per cent cut of revenues from private operators, with one per cent specifically earmarked for social responsibility initiatives like addiction services and educational campaigns.
In Ontario, the government has announced a deal to end existing exclusivity rights in the Niagara Region, potentially allowing for more casinos. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. reached an agreement with MGE Niagara Entertainment Inc. to permit additional operators. This move is part of the ‘Destination Niagara’ plan, which aims to increase tourism through new casinos, a theme park, and other infrastructure developments.
