Ontario invests $500K in National Bank Open 2026 amid rain‑hit Montreal matches

The Government of Ontario is contributing $500,000 to support the 2026 National Bank Open, a WTA 1000 event in Toronto. Organisers expect the tournament to draw more than 200,000 spectators, generate close to $60 million in GDP and reach over 70 million viewers worldwide.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka said she is hopeful ahead of her opening match at the Canadian Open and will partner with Novak Djokovic in mixed doubles at the upcoming US Open. She also voiced support for the WTA’s new one‑time gene‑test eligibility policy.

Heavy rain in Montreal disrupted the men’s draw, with only two of fourteen scheduled matches completed on the first day and the remainder to be rescheduled. Top‑ranked men Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the event. Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko withdrew from the National Bank Open because of a knee injury.
