Canadian Thanksgiving traditions and community celebrations

Canadian Thanksgiving, observed annually on the second Monday of October, has roots dating back to 1578 when English explorer Martin Frobisher held a ceremony in present-day Newfoundland and Labrador to mark a safe Atlantic crossing. The holiday has been shaped by both European settlers' harvest festivals and the long-standing traditions of Indigenous Peoples expressing gratitude for the land.

In Richmond, British Columbia, Tapestry Church continues local traditions of community support through its Tap Care ministry. The church recently hosted its third annual family-style Thanksgiving dinner, providing a meal for approximately 100 individuals who have been supported by the congregation’s pastoral care throughout the year. The event serves as a time for guests to find companionship and rest regardless of their personal circumstances.
