Canadian travel to US falls 23% after Trump’s second term

After Donald Trump began his second term as U.S. President in early 2025 and introduced an "America First" agenda, Canadian travel to the United States dropped sharply. The Canadian statistics agency reported that 7.1 million fewer Canadians visited the U.S. in 2025 than in 2024, a 23.5 % decline. Travel spending on U.S. visits fell by C$3.3 billion, to a total of C$18.8 billion.

The U.S. Commerce Department said 20.2 million Canadians travelled to the United States in 2024, compared with 16 million in 2025. At the same time, Canadians increased domestic trips and travel to other destinations. Relations between the two countries have soured amid new tariffs, repeated threats from President Trump, and his suggestion of making Canada the 51st U.S. state. In response, several Canadian provinces removed U.S. alcoholic products from shelves and urged consumers to buy domestic goods.
