Canadian Universities Secure Nearly $11 Million in Federal Research Grants

Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador received a total of $9,436,718 in funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The money supports 40 research teams across the faculties of Medicine, Science, Engineering and Applied Science, covering topics from marine biodiversity to sustainable energy and neuroplasticity. The funding was announced on July 7 as part of a national $630 million investment in natural sciences and engineering research.

The University of Prince Edward Island was awarded over $1.5 million in combined NSERC and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grants. Projects include CRISPR‑based salmon immunity studies, adaptive robotic welding, climate‑resilient coastal research and solid‑state battery development. Minister Mélanie Joly highlighted the broader $630 million NSERC allocation and $289 million SSHRC awards during the announcements.

Both institutions cite the grants as strengthening their research capacity and international reputation.
