France cinema box office hits record August attendance

French cinema experienced a historic surge in attendance during the summer of 2026. According to data from the CNC, August saw nearly 20 million admissions, marking the best August since records began in 1980. This performance follows a strong July, bringing the combined summer total to 37.5 million spectators, matching the record set in 2011.

For the first eight months of 2026, French theaters recorded 127.92 million admissions, a significant post-Covid recovery. Key drivers of the August success included 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day', which drew over 6 million viewers, and 'Odissea', which together accounted for nearly half of the month's attendance.

As the season transitions into September, the film industry is preparing for a diverse lineup. This includes new drama releases such as 'La Frappe' and 'The Good Sister', highly anticipated French productions, and a variety of streaming additions on platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Canal+.
