Canal Once regains control after two‑month IPN student occupation
Students and faculty from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) seized the public television channel Canal Once on 20‑21 May 2026, demanding institutional improvements. The occupation lasted more than two months, during which the channel kept broadcasting from alternate sites. On 2 August 2026 workers reclaimed the premises, describing the operation as peaceful, while some protesters claimed force was used. Mexico’s Secretary of Education, Mario Delgado, said a first inspection showed visible damage to the historic archive, noting “a simple vista sí hay daños al archivo, hay material roto”. President Claudia Sheinbaum announced investigations into possible damage to the national patrimony and into alleged funding of the occupiers. Dialogue tables between the students, the IPN and federal authorities will continue, and a technical evaluation of the infrastructure and archive is planned.
