France: Telecom and media sectors face price hikes and VAT changes

French telecommunications and media sectors are facing significant price adjustments driven by corporate decisions and proposed government fiscal policies. Major operators including Orange, SFR, and RED are implementing various price increases for mobile and fixed internet subscriptions, with some customers seeing monthly hikes ranging from 1 to 5 euros.

Simultaneously, the 2027 finance bill has sparked intense debate regarding a proposed VAT increase for pay television. The measure would raise the rate from 10% to 20%, aiming to harmonize taxation with streaming platforms. Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada has criticized the move as economically unsound, warning it could cost the group 200 million euros annually and force a reduction in investments for French cinema and sports, including major football and rugby rights.

Other fiscal changes in the 2027 budget include measures to end VAT optimization for company cars and potential increases in fees for Sosh subscribers, such as higher cancellation costs and equipment return penalties.
