Canalink completes 553km submarine cable deployment for Project Atlantica

Canalink has completed the deep-sea deployment of 553 kilometers of submarine cable as part of Project Atlantica. The final shore-end connection was completed in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, by the cable-laying vessel Teliri.

The project aims to strengthen digital connectivity, data transmission capacity, and communication resilience between the Canary Islands, specifically linking Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The infrastructure utilizes two main corridors: an eastern route connecting Ojos de Garza (Gran Canaria) with Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) and Playa Honda (Lanzarote), and a western route linking Barranco de Tenoya (Gran Canaria) with Corralejo (Fuerteventura) and Playa Blanca (Lanzarote).

With a total budget of 34 million euros, the project received 23 million euros in funding from the European Union through the CEF Digital program. Following the marine deployment, work will continue on connecting the submarine infrastructure to the terrestrial network, including shore-end tasks, drilling, and the adaptation of Cable Landing Stations (CLS) at seven mooring points.
