Canarian groups protest high flight costs and advocate for rural women's rights
Associations including Canarios sin Alas, Canarios por la Movilidad Justa, and Casa Canarias Cataluña have organized simultaneous protests in Madrid and Barcelona for October 31. The demonstrations aim to denounce the high cost of air travel to the Canary Islands, which organizers claim creates an economic barrier for residents living in mainland Spain for work or study. These individuals often lose their resident status and the associated public subsidies, making travel during peak periods unaffordable.
Separately, the political group Nueva Canarias–Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) participated in the 'Women and Rurality' conference in Castelló. Represented by Isabel Guerra, Celeste López, and Dunia González, the delegation advocated for equality policies that address the specific challenges faced by rural women in the Canary Islands. They highlighted how insularity, territorial fragmentation, and ultra-peripheral status create unique obstacles regarding employment, public services, and professional development.
