Canarian lawmakers debate education authority and housing crisis

In the Canary Islands, political debate has centered on teacher authority and the regional housing crisis. Carmen Hernández of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) criticized the new Law for the Recognition of the Authority of the Teaching Profession, arguing it lacks the necessary funding, human resources, and material support to be effective. Hernández noted that while the goal of reinforcing teacher authority is shared, the law fails to incorporate contributions from the educational community, including unions and families, and warned against creating “false expectations” ahead of the 2027 elections.

Separately, Vidina Espino of Coalición Canaria criticized the PSOE's management of the housing emergency. Espino accused the central government of being “eight years late” to address the crisis, specifically noting that families have yet to receive keys for housing projects previously announced by President Pedro Sánchez. In contrast, Espino highlighted regional efforts under President Fernando Clavijo, citing over 1,900 public homes currently under construction and 37 million euros allocated to rental assistance.
