Canarian left-wing forces form UPC coalition for general elections

Four nationalist left-wing forces in the Canary Islands have reached an agreement to run together in the general elections on November 29 under the brand ‘Unidad del Pueblo Canario’ (UPC). The coalition includes Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista, Podemos, Izquierda Unida, and Movimiento Sumar.

The alliance aims to provide a unified voice for the archipelago in the Congress of Deputies, focusing on defending Canarian interests, guaranteeing the right to housing, and strengthening public services such as health and education. The groups have registered with the Central Electoral Board to counter political fragmentation.

This move creates a competitive landscape in the region, as they face a separate nationalist coalition composed of Coalición Canaria and Municipalistas Primero Canarias. While the UPC focuses on a left-wing platform, the opposing group seeks to reunite former political allies to secure representation in Madrid.
