Canary Health Service begins treatment for Butterfly Skin patients

The Canary Health Service (SCS) has begun administering Vyjuvek, a high-cost topical gel treatment for patients with Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare condition commonly known as ‘Butterfly Skin’.

The treatment was initiated at the Pediatric Day Hospital of the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital. Because the medication is not currently part of the Spanish National Health System or commercially available in Spain, the SCS made the unilateral decision to finance the drug for eligible patients.

Vyjuvek is indicated for patients with mutations in the type VII collagen alpha 1 chain gene. The gel is applied topically to promote the healing of complex wounds that do not respond to conventional treatments, significantly improving the quality of life for those suffering from extreme skin fragility.
