The Canary Island pine is demonstrating remarkable resilience in La Palma, where approximately 4,900 hectares burned during the August 2016 wildfires. This endemic species is capable of regenerating from its own trunk after extreme heat.
Biologists note that the tree possesses unique adaptations, including bark up to eight centimeters thick that acts as a thermal shield and axial parenchyma tissue that allows for new shoots after severe damage. Additionally, its cones open under extreme heat to release seeds, facilitating natural recolonization. While the pines show high survival rates, scientists warn that the broader ecosystem will require significantly more time to fully recover.
