Canary Islands anthem officially updated to recognize La Graciosa as eighth island

The Spanish official gazette (Boletín Oficial del Estado) published on 7 August 2026 a law (Law 2/2026) that amends the Canary Islands anthem. The amendment changes a single line in the third verse, replacing the phrase “Repartido en siete peñas” with “Repartido en ocho peñas” to reflect the inclusion of La Graciosa as the archipelago’s eighth island.

The change is purely textual; the melody, musical score, flag and coat of arms of the Canary Islands remain unchanged. The reform follows the 2018 Statute of Autonomy, which formally recognized La Graciosa as an island, prompting the regional parliament to update the anthem for consistency with the current territorial reality.
