Canary Islands banana producers withdraw 630,000kg due to low prices
The Asprocan Marketing Commission has approved the first market withdrawal of the year for Canary Islands bananas to combat low prices. Approximately 630,000 kilograms of bananas will be removed from the market during week 34, starting August 17. This measure reduces the planned shipment volume from 6.43 million kilograms to 5.8 million kilograms.
Producers are facing a significant gap between market prices and production costs. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture indicates that while production costs range between 0.70 and 0.80 euros per kilogram, producers received only 0.37 euros per kilogram in week 32.
The withdrawn fruit will not be sent to mainland Spain or the rest of Europe. Instead, Asprocan and Coplaca plan to redirect a portion to the Food Bank and Morocco. Any remaining fruit may be used as livestock feed or destroyed.
