Canary Islands banana sector reports growth and seeks increased EU funding

The Canary Islands banana sector is reporting significant growth and advocating for increased European Union funding. Grupo Europlátano announced a 23.4% increase in sales during the first half of 2026, marketing 32 million kilograms through its own ripening centers. The group also achieved a record in Switzerland, with sales increasing by over 150% compared to the previous year.

Simultaneously, the producer organization ASPROCAN is calling on the Spanish government to advocate for an increase in the funding of the Program of Specific Options for Remoteness and Insularity (POSEI) during the 2028-2034 EU Multiannual Financial Framework negotiations. ASPROCAN emphasizes that maintaining current funding levels is insufficient and seeks to ensure the autonomy and specific support required for outermost regions.
