Canary Islands boosts care service inspections as unions demand equal indemnities

The Government of the Canary Islands announced the hiring of two companies to strengthen inspection and supervision of centres within the System for Autonomy and Care of Dependence (SAAD). The new contracts, costing over 440,000 euros, will target services such as home assistance, tele‑assistance and programmes that promote personal autonomy, aiming to improve quality and address long‑standing complaints.

The public‑sector union UGT held a meeting with government delegate Anselmo Pestana, urging that the archipelago be included in the upcoming revision of residence and island indemnities. The union points out that the current agreement raises indemnities for the Balearic Islands but excludes the Canary Islands, which it says hampers recruitment and retention of civil‑service staff. Pestana pledged to review the request and provide a response before the end of the week.
