Canary Islands, Ciudad Real launch 20‑year forest and tree plans

The Government of the Canary Islands approved a new Forest Plan that replaces the 1999 version and sets out a 21‑year strategy for the archipelago. The plan emphasizes fire prevention, climate‑change adaptation and the socioeconomic role of the forest sector. Regional minister Mariano H. Zapata highlighted the roadmap as a coordinated effort to protect natural heritage, while General Director of Natural Environment Miguel Ángel Morcuende explained that the document provides strategic guidance without superseding existing legislation.

In mainland Spain, the Ciudad Real City Council unveiled its Plan Director del Arbolado, a 20‑year framework for managing the city’s urban trees. The plan, presented by council member Gregorio Oraá, defines 26 challenges and 12 strategic lines aimed at protecting and enhancing the urban forest, which now comprises about 34,000 trees. It incorporates citizen input and stresses the importance of green infrastructure for residents’ quality of life.
