Canary Islands demographic strategy requires urgent implementation

Casimiro Curbelo, spokesperson for the Agrupación Socialista Gomera (ASG) parliamentary group, has called for the rapid execution of the Canary Islands' Demographic Challenge and Territorial Cohesion Strategy. He emphasized that the approval of the plan is only the first step and that the real challenge lies in its effective implementation to improve lives.

The strategy aims to combat depopulation, encourage generational renewal, and create opportunities in rural areas, the midlands, and the Green Islands. Curbelo highlighted the demographic imbalance within the archipelago, noting that while some areas grow economically and urbanistically, regions such as La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro are experiencing aging populations and loss of inhabitants.

The plan involves mobilizing 1,400 million euros over its first two years of application, encompassing 43 measures and 428 specific actions. Curbelo has also advocated for differentiated taxation for La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, alongside equal access to housing, employment, and public services to help young people remain in their home municipalities.
