Canary Islands domestic violence reports and 112 calls rise sharply in early 2026

In the first quarter of 2026 the Domestic Violence Observatory recorded 2,974 gender‑based violence reports in the Canary Islands, a 4.6 % increase over the same period in 2025 and a 7.7 % rise in women victims (2,672). The region now ranks third in Spain with 23.4 victims per 10,000. Funding for prevention has lagged: the 2026 regional budget grew only to €14.7 million and emergency social aid fell from €840,000 in 2023 to €390,000, while allocated funds for domestic‑violence programmes remain under‑utilised.

The 112 service for women victims handled 9,693 calls in the first half of 2026, 13 % more than a year earlier. About 59 % of those were emergencies, prompting 1,117 activations of protective devices and the sheltering of 219 women and their 92 children. Police and health personnel responded over 5,500 times. Calls from victims rose among minors (165 girls) and seniors over 76 (105 women). Perpetrators were mainly current or former partners.
