Canary Islands euthanasia commission dismissal sparks investigation request
The Association for the Right to Die Dignified (DMD) has submitted a formal request to the Spanish Ministry of Health to investigate the removal of Elisa Corujo as president of the Canary Islands Commission for the Guarantee and Evaluation of the provision of assistance to die.
Representatives from DMD expressed concerns that the decision could compromise the independence of these commissions. The association has also requested that the Technical Committee on Euthanasia address the matter during its upcoming meeting on November 4.
Furthermore, DMD officials highlighted transparency issues in the Canary Islands, noting that the region is the only autonomous community that has not published data regarding the provision of euthanasia for the years 2021 through 2024. The association warned that bureaucratic delays and a lack of coordination between technical teams and guarantee commissions could result in patients dying while waiting for processing.
