Canary Islands expands oncology care outside of hospitals
The Canary Islands is implementing a decentralized oncology care model that allows certain cancer therapies to be administered outside of hospital settings. This initiative, which has been active for approximately two years in major medical centers in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, aims to improve patient experience by allowing treatment within their own environments while freeing up hospital capacity.
As the first autonomous community in Spain to adopt this extra-hospital model, the region is now working to extend these services to the remaining islands. A key factor in this transition has been the use of subcutaneous administration routes. Adasat Goya, director of the Servicio Canario de la Salud (SCS), noted that the shift responds to the need for new ways of providing care, stating that patients are better off in their own vital environments.
