Canary Islands expands protected housing initiatives
The Canary Islands government has reported a significant increase in private sector interest for protected housing. Since 2024, more than 200 applications have been filed for 4,428 properties, including 835 recent requests in 2026. This marks a notable recovery compared to 2021 and 2022, when applications were minimal.
In Lanzarote, the adjudication process has begun for 42 affordable rental homes in Playa Blanca, Yaiza. These properties, which include three-bedroom units and garages, are being distributed through specific quotas for youth, seniors, victims of gender violence, and individuals with reduced mobility. Applicants must be registered in the Public Registry of Protected Housing Demanders and meet specific residency requirements.
Additionally, an agreement has been reached between the Canary Islands and Ingenio to promote up to 20 industrialized affordable rental homes.
