Canary Islands health authorities warn of heat risks to medication

Health authorities in the Canary Islands have issued an alert regarding the risks posed by high temperatures to the storage and use of medications. The Canary Islands Pharmacovigilance and Therapeutic Information Center and the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) warned that summer heat can alter certain treatments and increase health risks.

Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and patients with chronic illnesses, are at higher risk of dehydration and related complications. Specific medications that require increased vigilance include diuretics, laxatives, and antacids, as well as drugs that affect hydration, electrolytes, renal function, or body temperature regulation.

Authorities recommend following package instructions strictly, respecting refrigeration requirements, and avoiding exposing medications to direct sunlight or leaving them inside vehicles. Patients are advised not to consume any medication that shows visible signs of alteration.
