Canary Islands health authority launches summer safety campaign amid beach water contamination dispute

The Dirección General de Salud Pública of the Canary Islands government expanded its summer campaign "En Canarias, el verano es pura felicidad" with guidance on light, varied meals, frequent hydration, and strict food‑handling practices to protect residents and visitors from dehydration and food‑borne illnesses during the hot months.

In Puerto de la Cruz, mayor Leopoldo Afonso (PP) acknowledged that the health department had emailed a warning on 23 June about elevated contamination levels in a water sample from Playa Jardín’s El Charcón area, but the message was read a day later. Opposition leader Marco González (PSOE) criticised the municipality for delayed and inconsistent communication, demanding accountability and an extraordinary council session to resolve the issue.
