Canary Islands health officials issue medication safety guidance for high temperatures

The Autonomous Center for Pharmacovigilance and Therapeutic Information of the Canary Islands has issued guidance regarding the proper storage of medications during periods of high temperatures. The advisory emphasizes the need for careful attention to how medicines are kept at home to prevent complications, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, chronic patients, and dependent individuals who face a higher risk of dehydration.

Health professionals recommend following specific storage and transport instructions, whether a medication requires refrigeration or room temperature. It is advised not to consume any medicine if its external appearance has changed. The advisory also notes that certain medications can exacerbate heat-related issues, such as those affecting hydration, electrolyte balance, renal function, or central and peripheral thermoregulation.
