Canary Islands hospital restores operating rooms after power outage

An electrical fault occurred on Thursday while maintenance work was being carried out on the power panels at Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC) in the Canary Islands. The failure disabled the climate‑control system in the surgical suites, forcing the suspension of scheduled operations.

Four urgent surgeries were transferred to the nearby Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, where a crisis protocol was activated and the patients were treated without delay. Technicians repaired the fault and restored the operating‑room environment by the evening, allowing the HUC to resume normal surgical activity the following morning. The incident is part of a broader €5 million energy‑modernisation programme at the hospital.
