Canary Islands host contemporary music festival and zarzuela anniversary
The Canary Islands are hosting several significant musical events, including the sixth edition of the Festival Contemporáneo de Canarias. Organized by the regional government, the festival begins with performances by the local Ensemble Lothar Siemens, directed by Jaime Wolfson, who will premiere works by José Brito and Lourdes Suárez in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Following them, the French Cuarteto Diotima will perform works by Ligeti, Luigi Nono, and local composer Juan Manuel Marrero.
In addition to contemporary music, the XXXIV Temporada de Zarzuela de Canarias is celebrating the 90th anniversary of Pablo Sorozábal’s ‘La tabernera del puerto’. A production featuring the Orquesta Sinfónica de Las Palmas and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Las Palmas Choir was staged at the Teatro Pérez Galdós in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, featuring soprano Ruth Terán in the lead role.
