Canary Islands launch health strategy to promote breastfeeding

Health authorities in the Canary Islands are strengthening coordination to promote breastfeeding across the archipelago. During the first Technical Conference on Breastfeeding, professionals met to establish work priorities leading up to 2027.

The primary objective of this strategy is to increase exclusive breastfeeding from birth and support its continuation until the infant is six months old. To achieve this, the healthcare system aims to improve coordination between care teams and standardize best practices across different levels of medical attention.

The initiative seeks to create a stable professional network to share experiences and identify areas for improvement. Special emphasis is being placed on the critical period immediately following childbirth, where families require clear information and consistent support to prevent the premature abandonment of breastfeeding due to common difficulties.
