Canary Islands launches new resources for chronic pain management

The Canary Islands Health Service (Servicio Canario de la Salud) has launched two new resources to improve the management of non-oncological chronic pain (DCNO). These initiatives are part of the Canary Islands Non-Oncological Chronic Pain Strategy 2022-2026.

The first resource is a didactic guide for patients, integrated into the Canary Islands Patient School, designed to encourage active participation in health management. The second is an interdisciplinary online training program for healthcare professionals, scheduled to begin in September.

These measures aim to foster a cultural shift in treating chronic pain by addressing its physical, psychological, and social dimensions. According to the latest Chronic Pain Barometer in Spain, approximately 27.1% of the adult population in the islands—roughly 361,700 people—live with chronic pain.
