Spain: Migration crisis calls and political candidacies in Canary Islands
In the Canary Islands, a judge in Arrecife has released three men accused of raping a woman on a boat traveling from Morocco to Spain. The prosecution recommended their release because the alleged incident occurred in international waters, meaning Spanish courts lack jurisdiction to prosecute the crime.
Amidst this, Manuel Domínguez, president of the People's Party (PP) in the Canary Islands, has called for a five-point plan to combat irregular migration. He urged the Spanish government to deploy Frontex and the Armed Forces, citing the humanitarian crisis on the Atlantic route. Domínguez also announced that the PP will begin the process for its XVI Autonomic Congress to renew its structures.
In regional leadership news, Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands and secretary general of Coalición Canaria, has formalized his candidacy for the 2027 regional elections. He secured 79 out of 80 possible endorsements from the National Political Council.
On the national stage, the political group Junts has set conditions for supporting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, including judicial reforms to the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) and a requirement of 176 seats in Congress.
