Canary Islands leaders clash over migration and detention policies

Political tensions have risen in the Canary Islands regarding migration management. President Fernando Clavijo of Coalición Canaria accused the Partido Popular (PP) and Vox of intending to turn the islands into a large migrant detention center. Clavijo criticized the PP's electoral commitment to repeal reforms that require Spanish autonomous communities to host unaccompanied migrant minors, arguing that such moves would treat the islands as a place to hide migrants from the rest of the country.

In response, Jacob Qadri, the PP's organization and communication vice-secretary for the Canary Islands, countered that the islands have already functioned as a major migrant retention center under the current administration of Pedro Sánchez. Qadri cited the 2020 situation in Arguineguín and recent arrivals in El Hierro, involving over 300 people and several fatalities, as evidence of existing saturation and collapse. He argued that the PP seeks to secure borders and combat human trafficking rather than adopting a passive stance toward irregular immigration.
