Canary Islands leaders signal presidential ambitions for 2027

Political leaders in the Canary Islands have begun defining their strategies for the 2027 regional elections.

Ángel Víctor Torres, the leader of the PSOE in the Canary Islands and Spain’s Minister of Territorial Policy, has indicated his intention to run for the presidency of the regional government. Torres stated that he will not seek to form governing coalitions with Vox or the People's Party (PP), whom he characterized as the “ultra-right.” He expressed confidence that the PSOE will emerge as the leading political force in the upcoming elections, citing the party's perceived responsibility while in opposition.

Meanwhile, Coalición Canaria (CC) has officially endorsed Fernando Clavijo as its candidate for the 2027 regional presidency. Following a unanimous decision by the party's Tenerife branch, Clavijo expressed his commitment to continuing the work of the current legislature. He emphasized the need for stability and a project that prioritizes the archipelago's ability to make decisions regarding its own social, economic, and territorial challenges, rather than having them dictated by Madrid.
