Canary Islands Municipal Emergency Plans Approved in Los Realejos and Pájara

The municipality of Los Realejos on Tenerife is set to approve a new Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU) that, for the first time, incorporates volcanic eruption risk. The plan was drafted with the University of La Laguna’s Chair of Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilient Cities and will be voted on in the council on 30 July before being sent to the Canary Islands Government for ratification and followed by training for emergency responders.

In Fuerteventura, the council of Pájara unanimously adopted its own Municipal Emergency Plan. Mayor Alejandro Jorge, security councillor Raimundo Dacosta and deputy mayor Alexis Alonso highlighted the measure’s importance for a town of about 20,000 residents, stressing coordination with police and other security forces and the municipality’s capacity to handle emergencies independently.
