Canary Islands municipalities face public housing delays

In the Canary Islands, local administrations are facing challenges regarding the availability and regularization of public housing. In La Laguna, the political group Unidas se puede has called for an inquiry into the administrative status of 20 teacher residences in Taco. Despite municipal assurances in March 2025 that the property regularization was in its final notary phase, residents have reportedly received no updates for over a year.

Meanwhile, in San Bartolomé, Lanzarote, Mayor Isidro Pérez is working to unlock municipal land for public housing. The municipality aims to transfer residential land to the Instituto Canario de la Vivienda (ICAVI), but progress has been delayed by administrative requirements, including a mandate for a full environmental assessment rather than a simplified one for the El Quintero unit. Similar efforts to provide land for public housing are also being pursued in Haría and Yaiza.
