Canary Islands NC-BC slams government over university funding cuts and debt‑relief plan

Nueva Canarias‑Bloque Canarista (NC‑BC) parliamentary group condemned the regional government's 2027‑2030 university contract proposal, saying it would leave the public universities of Las Palmas and La Laguna with a €15 million deficit and jeopardise their sustainability. spokesperson Carmen Hernández argued the issue is “not a lack of resources but a political decision”, accusing the coalition of the right‑wing parties of “bringing the universities to the ICU with assisted breathing”.

NC‑BC’s national secretary for training, Román Rodríguez, also attacked Coalición Canaria (CC) for reversing its stance on a proposed debt‑relief package. The central government plans to assume part of the €83 billion regional debt, including €3.259 billion for the Canary Islands. Rodríguez noted that CC had a year earlier labelled the measure “theft”, but now praises it, and he warned that the current formula leaves the islands “worse off”. Both criticisms highlight a broader political clash over funding and fiscal policy in the Canary Islands.
