Canary Islands officials call for tourism limits and improved infrastructure
The Canary Islands government is calling for limits on tourism growth to ensure the industry aligns with the capacity of the islands and their natural spaces. Tourism and Employment Minister Jéssica de León emphasized the need to regulate the sector by setting carrying capacities for islands and natural areas to protect resources for future generations.
Vice President Manuel Domínguez stated that tourism success must benefit local residents and workers by generating wealth and employment without neglecting the essential needs of the population, such as housing, water, and transportation. These discussions coincided with an awards ceremony in Fuerteventura that recognized excellence in sustainability, innovation, and employment within the sector.
