Canary Islands officials demand reinforced EU funding for agricultural programs

The Canary Islands government is calling for stronger protections and increased funding for its agricultural and fisheries sectors within the European Union’s Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034. Officials are advocating for the Community Program to Support Agricultural Productions in the Canary Islands (POSEI) to be established as an autonomous instrument with its own stable and reinforced financial allocation.

Canarian President Fernando Clavijo has urged Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to defend the interests of outermost regions (ORs) during EU budget negotiations. Clavijo expressed concern that the upcoming Spanish electoral cycle might distract from these critical discussions. He emphasized the need for a united front between Spain, France, and Portugal—the three EU member states with outermost regions—to ensure their unique geographic and economic needs are recognized in the new budget proposal.
