Canary Islands launches social economy strategy and heritage support

The Government of the Canary Islands has introduced the first Canary Islands Social Economy Strategy (ESCAES) for the 2026-2029 period. Presented to Parliament by Minister of Tourism and Employment Jéssica de León, the roadmap includes an annual budget of approximately 4.47 million euros.

The strategy aims to support the archipelago's 3,516 social economy entities, which include cooperatives, foundations, and labor societies. Data from 2025 indicates the sector formalized over 19,000 contracts, with significant participation from women, youth, and people with disabilities.

In a separate initiative, the regional government is also strengthening support for the five Canary Island municipalities recognized as part of ‘Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España’. These municipalities—Teguise, Tejeda, Garachico, Betancuria, and Agulo—will receive economic support for heritage conservation and the development of tourism experiences that respect local identity and resident life.
