Canary Islands Ombudsman requests 7% budget increase for 2027
Lola Padrón, head of the Canary Islands' Ombudsman (Diputación del Común), has requested a 7% budget increase for 2027, totaling approximately 5.34 million euros. The request comes in response to a rise in citizen complaints regarding public administration, which increased by 12% in 2025. So far this year, roughly 3,300 complaints have been recorded.
Padrón presented her roadmap to the President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, highlighting the need to expand the current staff of twelve people. The proposed budget aims to modernize technical tools, strengthen mediation programs, and reduce bureaucracy.
Key initiatives include the creation of a Citizenship School in La Palma to promote fundamental rights among youth and seniors. Additionally, the Canary Islands is pursuing a bid to host an international meeting of ombudsman offices in 2028.
